War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 16 February 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 2 May 1917, and marched into Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 6 June 1917; joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 25 June 1917, and posted to 8th Company. Wounded in action, 12 October 1917. Court of Enquiry, 19 November 1917, concluded: 'Missing, believed killed in the field 12 October 1917.' Statement, 45097 Pte D.J. JEROME, 8th Company, 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment: I saw Poole during the advance over Belle Vue Spur on the morning of 12 Oct. He was wounded & pointed to his elbow saying "I am hit." I told him to take off his gear & go back. On his way back he would have to pass over a shell swept area. I have not seen him since.' Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal |
