Military Medal 'During operations on the Somme on 17th September 1916, he repeatedly guided stretcher parties night and day through a heavy barrage of fire, and by his courage and initiative he was successful in bringing back many wounded who were exposed to the enemy's fire, and when some bearers had been killed and wounded he took out a stretcher squad and brought the wounded back under an intense fire.'
