During the above period Major Pennycook was in command of "D" Company NZ Pioneers and his constant supervision of the work of his Company combined with his judgement and skill in laying out the work were the principal factors in the good work done by his Company.'

Reported wounded in action, 15 February 1917 (gun shot wound, left arm); admitted to 7th Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, 20 February 1917; transferred to England, 20 February 1917, and admitted to 1st London General Hospital, 22 February 1917.

Admitted to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 15 May 1917; placed on NZ Roll on account of ill health caused by wounds.

Taken off NZ Roll, 16 July 1917, and appointed second in command, NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch.

Transferred to Otago Infantry Regiment, 15 November 1917; taken on strength, 2nd Bn, 20 August 1918.

KIlled in action, 24 August 1918.
