Military Medal 'Gallantry and devotion to duty at Mailly Maillet near Beaumont Hamel (Somme) on the morning of 5th April 1918. During a hostile attack the intense barrage wounded several men of his section. Regardless of the enemy fire this NCO rescued the men and subsequently carried one of them through the barrage to the Dressing Station. He returned, and at an important stage volunteered to repair the broken cable communication to Divisional Headquarters. He was largely instrumental in getting the line through under very heavy fire. Subsequently he frequently repaired lines under similar circumstances, until he was wounded on the
following day. Under trying conditions his gallant behaviour was an inspiring example to all.'
