Mention in Despatches 'Operations on Somme - 20th September/4th October 1916. North east of Flers. During the operations on the Somme this N.C.O. was in charge of the Company bombers and during the attack of the 21st September, he displayed great courage and resource in leading his men into the enemy trenches, which he himself was first to enter. Left with but a single man (the remainder having become casualties) he held the ground won until assistance arrived. Afterwards when orders were given to dig in he organised the parties and by his personal example and utter contempt of danger, made possible the success of the operation under a harassing shellfire. Although wounded he would not leave until ordered to by his platoon Sergeant several hours afterwards. He has previously done good work.' Awarded, and promulgated, 'London Gazette', 1 June 1917. |
