War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 15 November 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 29 January 1917; marched in to 5th Reserve Bn, Sling Camp, 30 January 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 5 June 1917; taken on strength, 5th Machine Gun Company, in the field, 24 June 1917. Wounded in action, 6 August 1917 (gassed shell), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; rejoined unit, in the field, 12 August 1917. Admitted to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance, 28 September 1917 (pyrexia, unknown origin), and transferred to 11th Casualty Clearing Station; to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, 1 October 1917; to England, 8 October 1917, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 9 October 1917; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 23 October 1917. Classified 'Unfit' (Disordered Action of the Heart)by Medical Board, 3 May 1918, and placed on NZ Roll. Marched into Discharge Depot, Torquay, 27 June 1918. Commenced return to New Zealand from Plymouth on board HT 'Ionic', 24 August 1918; discharged (no longer physically for War Service on account of wounds received in action: gas poisoning), 29 November 1918.
