Military Medal 'As a stretcher bearer on the 25th April when searching for wounded along Walker's Ridge he came upon a Machine-gun Section all but one of which were casualties. He assisted this man to carry the gun to a new position, and while still under heavy fire carried S.A.A. to him so that the gun could be effectively used to repel the Turkish attack. He also ably carried out his duties as stretcher bearer until
wounded at this work in August 1915.'
Source: London Gazette Date: Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. After his platoon commander had been severely wounded he led his men to a forward position, which he thoroughly consolidated under severe bombardment. He kept his position for sixty hours, doing excellent work and setting a splendid example to this men.'
