Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Ruyaulcourt, 4th/6th September, 1918. When his company was held up by machine guns within 200
yards he twice got up from cover to draw their fire and locate them, and did so successfully, enabling the advance to proceed. On the 5th September he penetrated Havrincourt Wood between two enemy posts and brought back accurate information as to the enemy's dispositions. The same night, after patrolling the wood, which was still occupied in places by the enemy, he succeeded at dawn in getting in touch with the battalion on the left. His cool courage on all occasions was an example to all ranks.'
