'For splendid work during the operations around Bapaume and near Gouzeaucourt from August 26th to September 13th 1918. On September 12th in the operations near Gouzeaucourt this NCO was in charge of a Lewis gun which was placed in a position to defend the flank of the Battalion which was exposed. The enemy were still holding the Wood to his right rear and by constantly bringing fire to bear on the trenches they were holding he caused them to surrender. His work during the whole operation was characterised with great dash and gallantry.'
