Military Medal

'As one of the Brigade Signal Section, Lance Corporal Nicholas has shown the greatest devotion to duty and an utter disregard for his own personal safety. During the operation for the capture of Messines from 7/9th June 1917, this NCO carried out the duties of linesman under great difficulties and constant shell fire. This Brigade owes much to his untiring energy and devotion to duty both in and out of the firing line. He previously did excellent work during the operations on the Somme in September of last year.'

Bar to Military Medal

'For gallantry and devotion to duty on the morning of 5th April, he set out to repair the lines to the Brigade forward station and one of the Battalions in Auchonvillers near Beaumont Hamel (Somme). Although the hostile fire was intense he carried out his tank regardless of all personal safety, and unaided succeeded in getting the lines through. With great fearlessness and devotion to duty he worked for over an hour in the very heavy gas and shell bombardment and was instrumental in restoring the Brigades main communications at a critical period.'
