Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the night of September 4th/5th in front of Ruyualcourt Private Nichol was sent from Company
Headquarters to Battalion Headquarters with an important message. On the way he had to pass through an unusually heavy barrage of high explosive and gas. He delivered his message to Battalion Headquarters and then returned with another message to his Company, as well as taking a message to another Company on the way. No other runners were able to get through the barrage.'
