During the period under review he commanded his Battery with initiative; a splendid fighting officer, cool, brave and devotion to duty. His Battery was shelled every day during the Messines operations, but he never failed to keep it in action. On one occasion when hostile fire ignited a dump of ammunition he directed his men in putting it out.'

Battery positions was badly shelled during which some of his men were gunned. He remained under heavy fire directing operations and assisting them to safety.
