Military Medal

'Gallantry and devotion to duty at St Yves Hill, north of Ploegsteert Wood, on 23rd March 1917. At 4.am 23rd March, after an intense bombardment, the enemy attempted to raid our front line trenches at St Yves Hill. Sergeant Murray and a Rifleman, who was afterwards killed by the bombardment, noticed the enemy's Raiding party of about 20 men coming over our parapet. They instantly opened rapid fire on the enemy who thereupon turned and fled. This NCO?s work during the Somme operations in September 1916, in a raid in January 1917, and since the battalion arrived in France has been of a very high order. By his personal courage he has always inspired his men.'
