Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and good leadership during an attack. When his platoon was held up by machine gun fire, he placed his Lewis gun into such a position that they were able to keep down the enemy's machine gun fire and directed one of his sections to rush the post from a flank. He thus cleared the garrison; then, mounting his guns on the rear of the enemy trench, he harassed their retreat. His work in
mopping up and consolidating was invaluable.'

He returned to a trench from which his platoon had been driven by heavy shell fire in order to dig for one of his men who was buried by the explosion of a big shell. He set the finest example to his men. As acting Company Sergt Major he showed fine initiative and gallantry in reorganising the Company under the most difficult circumstances.'
