'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on the Passchendaele Ridge on 12th October 1917. He was employed as a Runner, and did extremely valuable work, crossing and recrossing country swept by machine gunand shell fire. In spite of the dangerous nature of the work, he always delivered his messages very promptly. I cannot too highly recommend this man?s work.'
