Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field on 13th September 1918 near Gouzeaucourt. This NCO proved himself a resourceful leader under the most adverse circumstances. When an attacking party was held up through casualties he took his section forward as a reinforcement, and although owing to casualties he was able to get only three men up to the post which was in danger of falling, he gallantly pressed on. He was responsible for holding this post and for saving his wounded comrades until reinforcements arrived, when he was the only
unwounded man left and was alone holding off the enemy. He set a fine example to his men and behaved with great personal courage.'
