Proceeded overseas to France, 7 January 1917; relinquished appointment as Lance Corporal; joined 1st Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 5 February 1917, and posted to A Company.

Admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 22 February 1917; transferred to No 2 Casualty Clearing Station, 23 February 1917; to No 2 Australian General Hospital, 25 February 1917 (wound, left hand); to England, 27 February 1917, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on
