Enlisted with rank of Major and appointed to position of Adjutant, Otago Infantry Battalion, 14 August 1914. Proceeded overseas from Wellington, 16 October 1914.

Disembarked Alexandria, Egypt, 3 December 1914.

Assumes command of the Otago Battalion and promoted to rank of temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in the absence of Lieutenant-Colonel T. W. McDonald (sent back to New Zealand due to ill-health), 29 December 1914.

Proceeded overseas with unit from Alexandria to the Dardanelles on board HMT 'Annaberg', 10 April 1915.

Slightly wounded but remains on duty, 8 August 1915 (gun shot wound, back).

Admitted to HMT 'Alaunia' and evacuated to hospital in Alexandria, Egypt, 13 August 1915 (shrapnel, left leg); admitted to 19th General Hospital, Alexandria, 14 August 1915.

Re-admitted to 19th General Hospital with new disease, 31 August 1915 (enteric dysentery); embarked for England on board HMHS 'Egypt' for three months further treatment, 22 October 1915.

Having vacated the command of the Otago Battalion is struck off the strength of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (on account of ill health), 24 February 1916.
