Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field on 26th day of March 1918. North east of Mailly Maillet. This NCO showed great dash and determination when attacking the final objective. He personally led a party of his men against the
enemy capturing a machine gun and crew and killing several of the enemy. He then reorganised his party, though weakened by casualties and assisted his Company Commander in taking another enemy machine gun and several prisoners. Later he was buried twice during heavy shelling and although badly bruised and shaken refused to leave what remained of his platoon till his Company was relieved. When his portion of the trench was subjected to a severe bombardment from the enemy
heavy guns this NCO personally dug out several of his men who were buried, and throughout the occupation of the front trenches by his Company behaved in such a manner as to inspire all with confidence by his bravery.'
