Military Medal 'For conspicuous bravery near St Julien on the 3rd October, 1917. At about 2am, on the 3rd October, 1917, the ammunition pit of his gun was hit and set on fire by a hostile shell. In spite of the fact that the ammunition commenced exploding, Gunner Mills obtained water from some shell holes nearby and continued to do so until he had put out the fire. Gunner Mills showed great courage and a total
disregard for his own personal safety.'
