Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 12th October 1917 during the attack on Belle Vue Spur this Lewis gunner did exceptionally good work in
command of a section which he took over when the NCO became a casualty. He kept his gun working continually, was always cool, and had a thorough grasp of the position. His courage was a great incentive to all ranks. He kept his gun clean, and
brought it the whole way out with the spare parts.'
