'For consistently good and conscientious work, often under dangerous circumstances. As a Battalion runner this man has shown particularly gallant conduct during the recent operations, where he was often under heavy artillery and machine gun fire carrying messages between Battalion and Company Headquarters. During this time he has displayed an utter contempt for danger and his cheerfulness under trying circumstances has had a splendid effect on his comrades.'
