Military Medal 'For gallantry and devotion to duty. On 24th August 1918 during the advance on Bapaume, his Lewis gun team was reduced to himself and one other. Nevertheless he continued to keep his gun in action against two enemy machine guns which he had silenced. In the counter attack when the company was forced to withdraw, he protected one flank, killing many of the enemy. His courage and initiative undoubtedly saved many lives and enabled the Company to consolidate the
position. This Soldier has a long record of continuous good service.'
