Military Medal 'During the bombing attack by the 2nd Auckland Battalion up the Flers trench and Flers Support trench, on the evening of the 20th September 1916, Private Middlemiss killed seven Germans who were endeavouring to cut off our bombing party. Since 15th September 1916, this man has killed with the bayonet and the bomb at least 23 Germans, and his gallant conduct throughout is in every way worthy of recognition.'
