'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations in front of Passchendaele on 12th, 13th and 14th October 1917. When in command of a Platoon, this N.C.O. led his man forward until the advance was held up, then without regard for his personal safety, and though himself exposed to heavy machine gun fire, he supervised the consolidation of a part of the Front Line with the utmost skill, coolness, and fearlessness. He inspired all rank by his splendid example.'
