Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At the assault on Belle Vue Ridge on October 12th when his platoon was ordered to advance under exceptionally heavy machine gun fire, his coolness and energy were an inspiration to the remainder of the men. Afterwards he volunteered to deliver a despatch over 100 yards of road, raked by machine gun fire, returning speedily with a reply, which was necessary for an important operation.'
