'On the 5th April near Colincamps his battery position and the whole vicinity were subjected to a heavy and continuous bombardment and all wires were cut at frequent intervals. This N.C.O. went through the barrage again and again repairing wires; and it was due to his personal courage and disregard to danger that communications were maintained. During the bombardment the Battery Staff Sergeant was wounded and Bombardier MacRae at once took charge of the Staff and throughout set them a magnificent example of coolness and devotion to duty. He has been previously recommended for gallantry in action both in Messines and Passchendaele.'
