Military Medal 'For gallantry and devotion to duty. Near La Basse Ville on 1st August this man, being a Platoon Runner, displayed great bravery and devotion to duty on three separate occasions in carrying out urgent messages from the advanced post of his platoon to Company Headquarters. On each occasion he had to pass over open ground which was being swept at the time by enemy machine guns and heavy shellfire. When stretcher bearers were required he made the journey again under similar conditions. Throughout the engagement he displayed the utmost devotion to duty.'
