'On 16th December 1917, near Polygone de Zonnebeke, the vicinity of the main, and at that date the only buried cable forward route, was heavily shelled by the enemy, with the result that the cable was blown up by a direct hit. Lance Corporal Belleby, a linesman stationed in an adjoining dugout, knowing the importance of the route, at once set out to the line, and despite the continued and heavyenemy bombardment, carried out temporary repairs sufficient to re-establish communications. Again on the 18th the route was broken, and this same N.C.O. effected repairs in an open and shelled area, and did not relax his efforts until communications had been completely restored. He showed much judgement and great courage during the whole period and used his party with utmost skill. During the time the Division has been in the line L/Cpl Bellerby has done excellent work guiding and directing forward working parties and when unable to get into immediate touch with his lines Officer has on all occasions displayed remarkable initiative.'
