Military Medal 'On the night of 26/27 May at Sailly au Bois, this NCO's gun pit caught fire during a particularly heavy and persistent concentration of gas and high explosive on the Battery. He immediately organised a fire party and although once driven away by the explosion of some 4.5 inch charges, he returned and succeeded in extinguishing the fire in time to save the gun. During the whole time the near gun pit was blazing fiercely and finally exploded. His gallantry in keeping his gun in action at a time when a hostile attack was expected set a splendid example.'
