War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 2 April 1916; disembarked Suez, 3 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 10 May 1916; disembarked Marseilles (date not recorded). Joined 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry regiment, in the field, 8 June 1916. Admitted to XX Corps Collecting Station, 1 October 1916 (enteritis); rejoined unit, in the field, 4 October 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 20 August 1917; promoted Corporal, 29 October 1917. Wounded in action, 20 November 1917 (shrapnel wound, left arm, right ankle: slight), and admitted to 2nd Canadian General Hospital. Appointed Lance Sergeant, 22 November 1917. Transferred (wounded) to England, 1 December 1917, and admitted to Mile End Military Hospital; transferred to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 29 December 1917; to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 4 January 1918; discharged on furlough, 19 January 1918, to report to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 1 February 1918.
