Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 10 May 1916; disembarked Marseilles (date not recorded). Joined 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry regiment, in the field, 8 June 1916. Admitted to XX Corps Collecting Station, 1 October 1916 (enteritis); rejoined unit, in the field, 4 October 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 20 August 1917; promoted Corporal, 29 October 1917. Wounded in action, 20 November 1917 (shrapnel wound, left arm, right ankle: slight), and admitted to 2nd Canadian General Hospital. Appointed Lance Sergeant, 22 November 1917.
