'On the night of 1st/2nd July this N.C.O. was sent out in "no man's land" with another N.C.O. and 8 men as a covering party prior to the raid. Immediately after placing his men in a position one of them, Pte Mitchell, was wounded in the leg. Without hesitation Cpl Bell carried Pte Bell under fire into a place of safety. He then returned to the covering party and remained there until relieved. Subsequent to the raid and while there was still considerable fire Cpl Bell went out on patrol in search of some of the raiders who were thought to be missing. He searched the ground in "no man's land" over which the raid took place, going close up to the enemy's wire. He has previously been noticed for coolness under fire, and has frequently done fine work with patrols in "no man's land".'
