Military Medal 'Throughout the period 15 September - 2 October 1916 this man set a splendid example to his Platoon by his devotion to duty and by sticking to his work under all circumstances. On 15 September his Platoon came under heavy shellfire while digging a communication trench towards Switch Trench. The section of trench he was working on was badly blown in but he kept on at his job and encouraged others to do likewise. He went out of his trench on one occasion and carried in a wounded man who was in danger of being hit again by the continual shellfire.'
