Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field during the attack South of Bapaume on 29th August 1918. This soldier was one of a bombing party which had the enemy on the move and were chasing him down a sap. He saw a light enemy machine gun in the trench which had been abandoned by the enemy and immediately popped up over the side of the trench and brought fire to bear with the gun on part of the trench ahead of the enemy in which they had to pass in their flight. Two or three of the enemy were killed while attempting to pass the points and the others gave themselves up to the remainder of our bombing party. This man showed great coolness, daring and initiative and, regardless of his own personal safety, kept his gun firing in face of heavy enemy machine gun fire.'
