Proceeded overseas to France, 6 June 1917; joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, and posed to 8th Company, 25 June 1917.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 19 December 1917; promoted Corporal (unpaid), 30 March 1918.

On leave to United Kingdom, 27 August 1918; admitted to Military Hospital, Cromarty, 13 September 1918; placed on 'seriously ill' list, 9 September 1918; removed from 'seriously ill' list, 18 September 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 20 September 1918.
