Mentioned in Despatches 'In the attack on the Switch Line, South east of High Wood on the 15th September 1916 this Officer displayed remarkable skill and initiative in reorganising the 2nd Auckland Batt. and consolidating the captured position under a very heavy bombardment by the enemy artillery. He was a splendid example of courage to all ranks. Flers Trench 21 September 1916, again on the 21st September while his company was holding the Flers trench and during a strong counter attack by the
enemy on the unit on his left. Major McKenzie moved out of the trench and personally rallied men of the 2nd Canterbury Batt. whose officers had fallen and succeeded in holding the enemy in check.'
