The 11th Reinforcements left New Zealand on board two ships (HMNZT 49 'Maunganui' and HMNZT 50 'Tahiti'). It is not possible from the Nominal Roll to determine on which ship an individual embarked. The Nominal Roll gives the date of departure as 1 April 1916; harbour records indicate that the actual date of embarkation was 2 April 1916.

'In the attack on the Switch Line, South east of High Wood on the 15th September 1916 this Officer displayed remarkable skill and initiative in reorganising the 2nd Auckland Batt. and consolidating the captured position under a very heavy bombardment by the enemy artillery. He was a splendid example of courage to all ranks. Flers Trench 21 September 1916, again on the 21st September while his company was holding the Flers trench and during a strong counter attack by the enemy on the unit on his left. Major McKenzie moved out of the trench and personally rallied men of the 2nd Canterbury Batt. whose officers had fallen and succeeded in holding the enemy in check.'
