Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 1st October 1918, during an attack on enemy positions east of Masnieres, this NCO, on seeing that a small party of his Company had penetrated deeply into the enemy lines, and that enemy
machine guns and rifleman on the exposed left flank were pouring in a murderous fire on them, quickly gathered together few of his men and led them forward against the enemy of the flank. He handled his men with the utmost skill and succeeded in getting with 200 yards of the enemy positions. From this position he opened fire on the machine-guns and diverted their fire on to his own position. By concentrated fire he succeeded in silencing at least one of these guns. The enemy
then attempted to work round to his rear, and realising that his small party was in great danger of being entirely cut off, he extricated them with considerate skill. He exercised throughout extreme coolness and bravery, and showed a fine contempt
for his personal safety, thereby inspiring his men in a most remarkable manner.'
