Disembarked Alexandria, 27 December 1915 (general Gallipoli evacuation).

Joined 1st Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, Moascar, 29 March 1916.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 3 April 1916, on charge of drunkenness.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 10 July 1916; rejoined 1st Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, Armentieres, 28 July 1916.

Found guilty, 19 August 1916, of being absent without leave, 17-18 August 1916 (13 hours): forfeited 4 days' ordinary pay, and 2 days' pay by Royal Warrant.

Wounded in action, 25 September 1916 (gun shot wound, left hand: blown up by a shell; landed on hand which bent under him); admitted to 15th Corps Collecting Station, 28 September 1916; transferred same day to 5th General Hospital, Rouen; to England, 30 September 1916, and admitted to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 3 October 1916; attached to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 14 October 1916.

Admitted to No 3 NZ General Hospital, Codford, 3 February 1917; marched in to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 9 February 1917.

Admitted to No 3 NZ General Hospital, 11 February 1917 (scabies); discharged to Headquarters, 14 March 1917.

Found guilty, Codford, 20 March 1917, of being absent without leave, 11 pm, 14 March, to 8.30 pm, 17 March 1917; Forfeited 4 days' pay, and loss of 4 days' pay under Royal Warrant.

Classified unfit by Medical Board, 4 August 1917, and placed on NZ Roll.

Commenced return to New Zealand from Plymouth on board HMNZT 'Remuera', 27 August 1917; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on acount of wounds received in action), 23 November 1917.

Total war service: 2 years 220 days (of which 2 years 72 days were abroad)
