'Operations: British Front, Armentieres, 7th July to 7th August, and Operations Somme, 12th September to 2nd October 1916. As Lewis gun Officer of the 2nd Auckland Batt., 2nd Lieut McFarland has rendered most meritorious service. He has trained his detachments up to a very high standard of efficiency, and during the recent operations about Flers these gun detachments have worked with great skill and devotion to duty. His work is deserving of special recognition.'
