Proceeded overseas to France, 28 August 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 20 September 1916.

Wounded in action, 21 February 1917 (gun shot wound, shoulder: severe), and admitted to No 2 Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to No 8 Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 23 February 1917; to England, 1 March 1917, and admitted same day to King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London; transferred to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 18 March 1918.

Classified unfit and placed on NZ Roll, 26 April 1918.

Discharged on sick furlough, 1 May 1917.

Commenced return to New Zealand from Avonmouth on board SS 'Marama', 14 July 1917; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action), 17 October 1917.
