Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field on 13th September 1918 near Gouzeaucourt. This man displayed great initiative and personal bravery during a hostile attack. His section leader, who was firing the Lewis gun of the section from an exposed position, was killed, and this man immediately rushed forward under heavy machine gun and rifle fire, and took over the gun, which he gradually worked back to a more suitable position from where he was able to materially assist in repelling the enemy. His resource and initiative were most valuable in helping his platoon to deal with a very awkward situation.'
