'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field at Briastre on 11th October, 1918. His section commander being wounded, Pte McCarthy took command of his section and led them forward to their objective under particularly heavy machine gun fire. His personal example had a steadying effect on his men, and he, throughout the day, controlled them splendidly. He also carried out valuable patrol work and sent back very useful information.'
