'For devotion to duty and gallantry in that on September, 15th. While proceeding with the stretcher squad from Thistle Alley Aid Post under heavy shell fire he was wounded in the arm. In spite of this he proceeded with his squad, and continued to carry out bearer work till he was wounded a second time when he was compelled to discontinue his work.'
