Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 12th October 1917, during an attack on Passchendaele Ridge, Lance Corporal J. McAusland was in charge of bearer squads. He repeatedly took his squads forward to the advanced posts and through a heavy artillery barrage and in spite of the mud and hostile fire brought in many men lying exposed to machine gun fire. He continued this work for 60 hours until he and his squad were exhausted. His gallantry and devotion to duty was a spur to the rest of his men and a magnificent example to the beaters and sided the quick evacuation of the wounded greatly.'
