Proceeded overseas to France, 28 August 1916; marched into Base Depot, Etaples, 29 August 1916. Admitted to 24th General Hospital, 5 September 1916 (sprained knee); discharged to duty, 11 September 1916. Joined 1st Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field, 22 September 1916. Found guilty, 12 October 1916, of insubordination: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2. Admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 27 March 1917; transferred to 2nd Australian Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 31 March 1917 (bronchitis); to England, 5 April 1917, and admitted to No 4 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames; discharged to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 28 April 1917. Ration allowance overdrawn by 18/- over period 5-14 May 1917: sum repaid. Joined 1st Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, France, 31 August 1917. Killed in action, 12 October 1917.
