Military Medal 'Operations east of Cambrai 13th October/11th November 1918. For continuous devotion to duty. This NCO on 19th October 1918 led a patrol to novelles supposed to be in occupation of enemy. He found the enemy gone but made a thorough reconnaissance and on his report the infantry advanced. Throughout the operations Corporal Matthews has shown commendable courage and devotion to duty in carrying out missions of a difficult and dangerous nature.'
