Enlisted with rank of private and posted to A Company, 30th Reinforcements, Trentham Camp, Upper Hutt, 28 June 1917. Proceeded overseas from Wellington with 30th Reinforcements on board HMNZT 'Corinthic', 13 October 1917.

Disembarked Liverpool, England, 8 December 1917; marched into Sling Camp and taken on strength, 4th (Reserve) Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment, and posted to C Company, 9 December 1917. Transferred from C Company to A Company, 4th (Reserve) Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment, 17 December 1917. Marched out from Sling camp and proceeded overseas to France, 20 March 1918.

Disembarked and marched in to New Zealand Infantry and General Base Depot, Etaples, France, 24 March 1918. Marched out from New Zealand Infantry and General Base Depot, Etaples, to join 1st New Zealand Entrenching Battalion, 26 March 1918.

Taken on strength 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, France, 1 April 1918.

Wounded in action, admitted to 1st/2nd East Lancashire Field Ambulance and transferred to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 30 August 1918 (gun shot wound, right thigh, compound fracture of femur); transferred to hospital train, 31 August 1918; admitted to No 8 General Hospital, Rouen, 1 September 1918; placed on seriously ill list, 3 September 1918; evacuated to England, 4 September 1918; admitted to No 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst, England, 5 September 1918; removed from seriously ill list, 10 September 1918. Classified as permanently unfit and placed on New Zealand Roll by medical board, 26 September 1918. Discharged from No 1 New Zealand General Hospital and transferred to New Zealand Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 24 January 1919.
