Mentioned in Despatches 'During operations on the Somme. He took his gun forward on September 25th 1916 with the first wave of the Infantry advance, brought it into action effectively on several occasions during the advance and subsequently assisted in the consolidation of the captured position. He took charge of and carried out the whole operation without his officer, who was killed at the commencement.'
