'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In the attack on Bon Avis Ridge on 29th September 1918 he took command of a section after the section commander was wounded. He skillfully led them to a part of the line that was being counterattacked and succeeded in driving the enemy off. By his prompt action at a critical time he saved a number of men from being cut off. Later he collected some stragglers and organised them for the defence of the ground that was gained.'
