Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At Hebuterne on 15th July 1918, Rfm Lyford rendered conspicuous service as a stretcher bearer. He followed close up with the attacking party and under heavy machine gun fire attended to the wounded and carrying to the regimental aid post. He worked until he was himself wounded, and after receiving attention from the Medical Office, although advised to go to the Dressing Station, he returned to his Company and helped the wounded throughout the night and next day. His care and attention and his cheerful demeanour did much to alleviate the suffering of the wounded and to
inspire confidence in those still carrying on.'
